As of 1 January 2025, the Republic of Korea officially joined Horizon Europe under a transitional arrangement. This significant milestone fosters international research collaboration and innovation opportunities between Europe and Korea.
This transitional arrangement, reached through negotiations between the European Commission and the Korean government, allows Korean researchers and organizations to participate in Horizon Europe's Pillar II calls and activities, starting with Work Programme 2025.
This collaboration builds on a rich history of cooperation between the two regions. Past collaborative efforts include advancements in 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and artificial intelligence, nanoelectronics and nanosafety, clean energy innovation, infectious disease and epigenome research, and satellite navigation.
With the official signing of the Association Agreement expected later in 2025, South Korea's participation in Horizon Europe is poised to expand into new areas such as antimicrobial resistance, automated driving systems, disaster resilience and security, and polar research.
TÜBİTAK and the SouthKorea National Research Foundation (NRF) have already joined forces under the Bilateral Cooperation Programme, opening new doors for Turkish entities to collaborate with South Korean counterparts on innovative projects. TÜBİTAK and NRF are actively encouraging joint research proposals in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. With South Korea's inclusion in Horizon Europe, the potential for cross-continental collaboration has amplified significantly. This presents an opportunity for Turkish entities to engage with South Korean partners in cutting-edge research, technological innovation, and knowledge exchange through Horizon Europe, too.
Turkish researchers
are strongly encouraged to explore this opportunity, partnering with
South Korean counterparts to spearhead projects that address global
challenges and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and
technology.
